The following common sense tactics provide a good start for your own personal safety strategy. These represent only a portion of the materials covered in the four hour PERSONAL PROTECTION/AWARENESS classes.

• Always have your car key out and ready before leaving a building. Fumbling for keys is an excellent time for criminals to sneak up on you!
• If you are accosted in a parking lot, roll underneath a nearby auto. It is difficult to force anyone out from under a car.
• Lock your car and take your keys when you get out to pump gas or go inside the station to pay.
• If you are in a car accident, stay in your car until police arrive.

Burglary Prevention/Home Security

• Burglary Prevention: If a burglar sees warning signs on your house, he will think twice before breaking in. Posted on a 3x5 card above doorknobs, a "Dog Loose in House", "Barkless Dog", or "Alarm System in Use" can be very effective .
• Put fine gravel in your driveway or in gardens surrounding the house. This makes a lot of noise that burglars won't want to chance.
• Not locking your doors when you're home endangers you as well as your home. Make it a habit to lock your door immediately upon entering your house.
• When moving into a new house or apartment always change or re-key the locks.
• Never hide an extra key under a mat, in a flower pot, or other obvious place.

• Be sure to lock doors/windows and never indicate to anyone that you are home alone. DON'T OPEN THE DOOR to anyone you are not expecting.
• If someone calls asking for your parent or guardian state that they can't come to the phone. Never say they are not home!
• Enter a public restroom with caution. It is best to have someone accompany you. Don't speak to strangers. Don't hang around in or around the area.
• Children in danger must learn how to scream for help! Screams are meant to alert others to danger, whether real or imagined.
